Social Justice

In order to build the beloved community in our congregation and in our community at large, our faith calls us to take action. Our UU values inform the actions of the UUC Social Justice Council. Individual ad hoc and standing committees do the hands-on work and the Social Justice Council meets monthly to coordinate the on-going work and discuss possible new actions that are needed. At a recent Social Justice Retreat, the participants reflected on our values and the possible actions that support these values always remembering that love is in the center.

Focus on our values of Equity and Pluralism- Learn about immigration, including the status of refugees in the US. Identify laws that are being introduced on the federal and state level and challenge elected officials to protect these marginalized groups. Be ready to take action to protest deportation. Support as allies, groups defending immigrants and refugees. Support groups protecting the LGBTQ+ community. Establish a point person or persons at UUC to spearhead coordination with other groups. Support teachers and school boards by showing up at meetings and speaking in support. Continue our racial justice work.

Focus on our values of Interdependency and Transformation- Participate in social justice-related actions with others. Let other groups know we support their issues. Learn from vulnerable groups how we can support their work. Continue to build relationships with other faith groups like FAST, which share our values. Create regular letter-writing campaigns to politicians and news media to protect Democracy. Meet regularly to assess how we are doing.

Focus on our values of Justice and Generosity- offer to UUC and the community at large trainings or book discussions on climate justice, white privilege, civic involvement and civic discourse. In addition, learn how to engage in nonviolent disobedience and how to participate in other forms of disruption or disobedience. Use our physical facilities to bring like-minded groups and individuals together. Promote Beacon Food Forrest and Garden as an outreach to the community.  Focus our financial giving (community outreach recipients) on groups that support our UU values.
