Established in February 2025 by the Board of Trustees, the UUC Food Forest and Gardens Committee aims to serve the wider community, promote food security, and honor the interconnected web of existence. Our mission includes providing educational programs, acting as a distribution hub, nurturing a mother garden, and offering a space for sharing, reflection, contemplation, and connection.

Our primary task is to restore the food forest and gardens, which began in February 2025. We are divided into three teams:

 

1. **Teaching Gardens** This is a partnership between UUC and the nonprofit Building my Veggie Garden. As an instructional tool, our goal is to collect plants and shrubs representing different cultures around the world and teach about them. As a garden, we aim to help gardeners succeed. As a team, we would like to help those who may be going through food insecurity. Our activities include:

* The Last Saturdays of the Month Event: We distribute plants, transplants, and seeds to gardeners. All transplants are organically grown at the teaching garden.

* Gardening Classes: Held at UUC or the MLK Community Garden, we support MLKCG's efforts to promote healthier food and end food insecurity.

* During the summer, we also feature cooking classes with ingredients harvested from our garden.

2. **The Beacon Food Forest** Our goal is to restore our food forest, which is a worthy endeavor. A compost station is already in place, and we invite the community to drop their kitchen scraps at the compost station. We are in the process of building three gardens inside the forest and planting more fruit trees. As we accomplish our goals, the community will be invited to participate and volunteer for our activities. 

 

3. **Front Gardens** These are the gardens surrounding the sanctuary.

As a team, our goal is to restore and maintain the gardens at the front of the property.
